Tasks

The Principal Applications Systems Engineer’s responsibility is to provide technical leadership for the design, development, and support of complex mission-critical business applications, including mainframe, client-server and web-based applications (TPF, MVS/DB2, Java, MS .NET, Oracle/SQL, etc.).
The primary role of the Principal Applications Systems Engineer is to establish detailed application designs (including design patterns/frameworks), consistent with Amtrak’s Enterprise Architecture; ensure alignment of developed software with designs; and to work closely with Operations to define technical requirements, statements of work, select vendors and system solutions.
The Principal Applications System Engineer supports the establishment of a Software Engineering Culture within the organization and works with technical staff to understand and resolve Tier 3 level technical issues related to applications. Additional tasks include creation of optimization programs to resolve problems and development of prototypes for proof of concept activities, assisting in development of technical documentation, leading demonstrations of developed software, and mentoring development staff.
The successful candidate should have extensive experience with large-scale complex application development,

support, and maintenance in mainframe, client-server, and web environments. The Senior Technologist is an expert/lead technical role and works on one or more projects as the technology subject matter expert or technical leader/consultant. When involved with a project team, acts in a consultative manner and typically does not provide administrative or management type of support. Responsible for research and analysis of complex technologies for at least one area of specialty.
Senior Technologists design technology solutions that may span the full spectrum of IT hardware and software. They may create prototypes and lead initial development or enhancement efforts and provide recommendations regarding technology, vendors, outside consultants, and trading partners. Each individual concentrates on one or more area of specialty or expertise that usually focuses on systems that significantly impact the operational effectiveness of the organization or cutting edge technologies that will drive new business. Additionally, Technology Consultants provide assistance with escalated support issues, mentor others within technology-related areas, and provide subject matter expertise on various project teams.
• Works on complex tasks, projects or supports issues that involve a high degree of risk, impacts business unit performance and makes use of the individual’s high level of knowledge within one or more areas of specialty. • Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to the following: • Researches and analyzes advanced technology trends in area(s) of expertise. • Assesses emerging technologies. Evaluates and may recommend new products or tools for the organization. Assists in cost-benefit and risk analysis. • Makes recommendations and influences long-term technology strategy and planning for multiple business units. • Assists in the development and analysis of source selection strategies. • Works with service providers to ensure their in-scope technical solutions are consistent with the enterprise’s business strategy and architecture. • Serves as a consultant and escalation point for issues. Provides project managers with technical consultation and advice, enabling quick response to inquiries related to the program. • Provides technical analyses to help define, assess, and monitor the technical aspects of the program or service. • Designs innovative solutions using new technologies. Recommends short- term alternatives when appropriate. • Troubleshoots existing information systems or networks to identify errors or deficiencies. Brainstorms possible solutions and evaluates alternatives against decision criteria. • Assists in the resolution of support issues escalated by senior operations or development personnel. Works with vendors during the problem resolution process as needed. • Provides technical expertise across business functions. Identifies opportunities to improve business processes via new technologies.
EDUCATION: • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or computer science, specialized training, certification, or equivalent work experience.
WORK EXPERIENCE: • Demonstrated experience within one or more specialty areas. • Demonstrated ability to perform all essential functions. • Knowledge of IT strategies and how they support client business, from a technical advisor standpoint. • Ability to conduct research and analysis of complex technologies for at least one area of specialty. • Demonstrated broad range and depth of knowledge in the respective area of expertise within the organization. • Problem-solving and effective oral and written communication skills. • Knowledge of technological advances related to subject-matter. • Skill in making presentations and effectively communicating recommendations to individuals and groups.
Requirements
PREFERRED WORK EXPERIENCE: • Advanced knowledge, both functionally and technically, of TPF/zTPF Reservation System applications and operating system.
COMMUNICATION AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: Strong oral and written communication skills
