SUMMARY: The purpose of the Quality Engineer is to develop and ensure quality processes are in place and followed, from specification to design, fabrication, assembly and commissioning. Responsibilities include developing robust Project Quality Plans and soliciting expertise from co-workers or contractors when necessary. Additional responsibility includes verification, validation and demonstration of compliance to all contractual obligations. The job function is made up of various duties at multiple stages of the design, manufacturing and customer acceptance process.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Manage the quality of machine equipment as assigned from contract approval to customer acceptance. Develop a test plan and check list which verifies the equipment meets customer expectations and facilitate its execution.
Attend design reviews and provide feedback which improves longevity, reliability and cost effectiveness of equipment.
Serve as the customer liaison by looking after customer interests such as effects of environment, work conditions, duty-cycle, work force, etc. on the design.
Inspect Loram equipment manufactured off-site from an Engineer’s perspective,
Test development, execution and reporting, which prove design conformance to customer specifications.
Maintain supplier product test specification for key components supplied to Loram; Engine, generator, traction, controls, etc. and work with Engineering to insure specs meet Loram requirements.
Assist and author workmanship standards to be followed by Loram’s shop and external suppliers.
Perform random workmanship audits in our shop and at suppliers.
Generate the proper documentation identifying problem areas through written communication (i.e., defects, corrective action(s) and the follow-up(s), prevents/establishing trends).
Verify preparation and setup is done correctly for assemblies before system startup.
Provide feedback to Engineering on drawing improvements for manufacturing and supplier efficiency and quality.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBLITIES: Periodically supervise large groups of people during the testing and commissioning phases. Lead process improvement projects.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university in Engineering, Manufacturing Eng./Technology or related field and 3-5 years experience ; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge of quality systems; Six Sigma, ISO-9000, APQP, Lean, etc.


Large machine manufacturing experience and knowledge of Lean Manufacturing
EN15085 standard knowledge and how it applies to potential suppliers.
Experience in process analysis and improvement using statistical analysis tools
Test and inspection process knowledge
Change management training and experience

COMPUTER SKILLS: Computer skills are required such as, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Vision and CAD

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Strong written and verbal communication skills required for cross-functional interaction with manufacturing, engineering and management personnel. Individual will be required to train manufacturing personnel in new processes. Ability to present written recommendations for process improvements along with writing manufacturing procedures. English only, foreign language is a plus.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in fluid situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to stand.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to vibration. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and risk of electrical shock. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places.

Up to 25% Domestic and International travel may be required. The work environment will also periodically be on railway property and can potentially be a dangerous environment. Additional safety training is required before spending time on our customer’s property.
