Job Description

Overview:

The Inspector performs inspection of construction projects for compliance with plans, specifications and contract documents.

Responsibilities:

The duties of the Inspector include, and not limited to,

• Conduct safety assessments, reviews, and participate in daily job safety briefings. Provide prompt verbal reports, followed promptly in writing, concerning activity and failures to the Resident Engineer.
• Analyze and review plans, specifications, contract documents, environmental, permits, etc. to gain a full understanding of the project.
• Visit and become familiar with the project site and surrounding area and all other circumstances affecting the work on the subject project. • Become familiar with the local people, both railroad and non-railroad, who are involved in the project.
• Create inspection checklists and frequency as described in project scope from construction specifications and submit to Resident Engineer for approval(s). Checklists should include, but not limited to, frequency of tests and parameters for satisfactory performance.
• Inquire with contractor as to satisfactory performance requirements associated with contractor designed work and assist in inspection of contractor designed work (ie: shoring or forms)
• Coordinate and facilitate all construction related meetings, including written meeting minutes.
• Assist in the interpretation of plans and specifications for contractors.
• Assure all required documents are received and correct prior to Notice to Proceed. (shop drawings, schedules, procurement schedules, etc.)
• Monitor daily construction activities throughout the project and arrange for all necessary testing of the work performed, including but not limited to concrete testing, compaction testing and other necessary quality control tests.
• On a daily basis, monitor contractor’s performance on the project through onsite inspections to guard against defects and deficiencies. • Conduct regular checks of material and equipment for compliance to contract documents.
• Prepare all daily reports and construction progress reports, including logs for compliance to contract documents. • Coordinate work, when required, between contractor, railroad and any other agencies involved in the project.
• Review pay estimates, prepare work directives and change orders for compliance to contract documents.
• Assist Resident Engineer with computation of percentage of work completed.
• Prepare daily photograph log as defined in the contract documents to reflect extent of work performed and any quality issues.
• Assure contractor prepare/revise record drawings.
• Coordinate project walk-through and punch list items.
• Follow up to approve a satisfactory performance for punch list
• Prepare project close-out documents


Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED plus 5 years construction experience unless otherwise required by state provisions. All jurisdictional certificates and state requirements as necessary.
