SUMMARY: Designs hydraulic and pneumatic systems within the Fluid Power Group for custom railroad maintenance equipment. Design tasks include hydraulic schematics, calculations, component selection, and hydraulic assemblies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
1. Compiles and analyzes operational, test, and research data to help establish functional and performance standards for newly designed or modified equipment or product. Use data to determine possible design improvements.
2. Determine feasibility of modifying existing or designing new equipment considering costs, time limitations, company planning, and other technical and economic factors. Coordinates design efforts to meet production schedules. Provide project task estimates and updates to technical lead and project engineers.
3. Work closely with Purchasing to select most value-added suppliers. Define clear hydraulic component specifications to suppliers. Select hydraulic components including pumps, motors, cylinders, valves, reservoirs, filtration, and fluid connectors.
4. Ensure all hydraulic components work together as a system to achieve motion control functions such as hydrostatic propel, conveyor rotation, cylinder motion.
5. Select pneumatic components (compressors, air tanks, fluid connectors, brake valves, etc) and apply in systems including brakes, dust filtration purging, and tool accessories.
6. Prepares and compiles necessary calculations to support product designs. Calculations include hydrostatic propel force and speed, braking distances, reservoir sizing, pressure drops, etc.
7. Leads design reviews consisting of multi-disciplined team members.
8. Uses CAD system to create simple 3D models and assemblies. The engineer will provide direction to designers to create more complex 3D models and assemblies.
9. Generates bills of materials, system layouts, detailed drawings, schematics, and other engineering release documentation. Checks the quality of drawings.
10. Develops or modifies test requirements and procedures to assist machine start up.
11. Travel to machines in working environments to collect data acquisition, assist during machine start up, and troubleshoot design related failures.
12. Confers with manufacturing, research, and other engineering personnel to evaluate field failures for root cause. Establish corrective action and/or product design improvements to address those causes.
13. Conceives and supports process improvements to increase productivity of Fluid Power Group.
14. Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: May provide work direction to designers.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

1. The individual has learned and abides by established design practices and procedures to complete assignments.
2. The individual has learned and efficiently uses the necessary design tools as required for area of discipline. (Autocad Inventor, Automation Studio schematic software, etc.)
3. The individual has mastered some of the application and integration design skills in area of discipline.
4. The individual must be a fully trained and competent design engineer that is capable of independent work.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: The individual must have a Bachelor’s Degree from a four-year college or university with a minimum of 4 years experience, or a Master’s Degree with a minimum of 2 years experience. Experience to consist of relevant product design or development of hydraulic components or motion control systems.

COMPUTER SKILLS: Ability to use computer keyboard and screens to access information needed to perform the Essential Duties and Responsibilities. Working knowledge of general-purpose business software to include Microsoft Word and Excel. Proficient in using 3D modeling software such as AutoCAD Inventor.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as drawings, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. The engineer will demonstrate the ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Speaks effectively before groups of customers, suppliers, or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to apply mathematical concepts, models, and equations to support designs and solve these mathematical problems using algebra, trigonometry, and calculus.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; in high, precarious places; and in outside weather conditions.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: Travel to machines located at both domestic and international sites. Typical travel is less than 15% annual with durations of approximately one week.
