Invensys Rail North America- Safetran

LEAD PROJECT ENGINEER

The Lead Project Engineer leads teams through signal system control design and provision contracts for rail transit. This position provides guidance and a technical framework in a manner that minimizes costs, maintains internal and external schedules and minimizes the effects of problems encountered during the course of a signal control system design. This position also has significant interface with customers in the areas of system requirements and problem resolution.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Reviews Contract Bid Technical specifications and drawings for feasibility and compliance issues.
B. Prepares estimates based on Contract Bid Technical specifications and drawings.
C. Prepares pre-bid questions to clarify contract requirements
D. Prepares ‘Requests for Information’ to customer to address requirement questions or specification compliance issues.
E. Estimates scope and cost of technical contract changes.
F. Identifies and advises engineering and program management on contract change opportunities.
G. Defines design standards and materials for use by the engineering team to develop specific signal control sub-systems. This includes, but is not limited to, track circuit equipment, power supplies, relays, vital and non-vital processor systems, wire and cable, ground equipment, traction power interfaces, communication interfaces, and equipment layouts (internal and external).
H. Formulates overall system design and sub-system integration plans.
I. Creates systems level design drawings, some using graphical drawing programs for use by the application engineering team and, if required, for submittal to the customer. These drawings include control line diagrams (defining vehicle speeds under a variety of conditions), single or double line track drawings (identifying all wayside equipment locations and track circuit details), route and aspect drawings (defining train operations in and around interlockings).
J. Attends technical meetings with the customer, the customers engineers, and the installation contractor to resolve problems, address progress, define respective responsibilities, coordinates scheduling of engineering work.
K. Performs development and/or coordinate verification efforts of block designs. For cab signal systems, this entails use of civil survey data, vehicle performance characteristics, developing and/or reviewing train acceleration and braking profile calculations, insuring adequate safety margins, and evaluating performance criteria to define track circuit lengths, track circuit boundary locations, and safe cab signal speeds for vehicles under all possible conditions. This is the input for the system-level control line diagrams.
L. Evaluates competitors products for specification compliance, applicability for use in our designs, cost effectiveness, and provides recommendations to management regarding suitability for use.
M. Develops test plans and detailed test procedures for factory and field sub-system and system testing.
N. Designs power distribution systems and perform power consumption calculations and analysis.
O. Develops circuit and processor logic standards for use by the AE engineering team during detail design.
P. Performs failure mode analysis of circuit, logic, and overall system designs and, if necessary, develop corrective actions.
Q. Performs circuit and detail checking.
R. Provides input and support to RAMS and EMI/EMC analysis efforts.
S. Trains other members of the engineering staff on various aspects of design, equipment, techniques, etc., formally when required, and informally whenever possible. For formal training, develop training program and schedules.
T. Provides man-loading, budgeting, and scheduling input to AE and program management.
U. Develops unique test equipment for systems, as required.
V. Prepares schedules, shift assignments, and lead team assigned to specific sub-projects.
W. Troubleshoots complex and unique problems and develops detailed action plans for their resolution.
X. Provides input to AE management regarding individuals assigned to assist with specific sub-projects.
Y. Advises Development Engineering regarding product features and enhancements.
Z. Leads engineering projects when assigned.
AA. Attends Company and industry-related meetings, as required.
BB. Establishes individual goals which are aligned with the Companys business strategies and objectives.
CC. Functions as a contributing member of the departments team and other teams, as assigned.
DD. Assists the department in the accomplishment of the teams goals.
EE. Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
A. Four year degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.
B. Twelve or more years of experience in control systems.
C. Knowledge of computer systems, computer based development tools.
D. Knowledge of domestic and international railroad standard and practices.

Qualifications
MENTAL AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
A. Ability to maintain a high level of visual attention and mental concentration for significant periods of time.
B. Ability to solve complex problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where some standardization exists.
C. Ability to read, analyze and interpret engineering and industry information.
D. Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
E. Ability to lift 10 or more pounds from the floor and above shoulders.
F. Ability to occasionally carry 25 or more pounds up to ½ mile.
G. Ability to frequently reach 2-3 feet forward and lateral.
H. Ability to occasionally bend, sit, kneel, pull, push, grip, climb and torque.
I. Ability to manipulate necessary office equipment, computers and peripherals.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND CONDITIONS
A. This position requires working both the internal and external environment. Activities occur inside and outside and position will be subject to changes in temperature.
B. This position will be exposed to physical hazards and equipment where special training and safety considerations are required.
C. This position has significant exposure to high noise levels, vibration, moving equipment, dust and/or grease, concrete floors, elevated steel and railroad tracks, and various environmental conditions.
D. This position requires working nights, weekends or non-regular hours to meet deadlines.
E. This position may require frequent travel.
